Chapter Sixteen

Caitlyn Anderson walked into the Station Pub & Grill with a slug of other people. She saw Barbara and Matthias Reynolds ahead of her in the group and assumed it was the cast and crew from the play. Caitlyn knew from her discussions with Doug that the place had been regularly packed with them for both lunch and dinner.

Veering away from the dining room, Caitlyn headed straight for the bar and climbed up onto a seat. Bar stools weren’t made for 5’1” customers. She asked the bartender for two glasses of white wine and turned to watch for Jennifer.

On the recommendation of Doug, Caitlyn had studied her current lease for the florist shop. Unable to make any sense of it, she’d asked Jennifer Parker to meet her for a drink so that she could pass along a copy. Although Jennifer was in her early forties, which made her several years older than Caitlyn’s thirty four, they were both lifetime residents of Teaberry and had met for both professional and personal reasons over the years. Jennifer’s office was not far from Caitlyn’s shop and they ran into each other often. Caitlyn had come to trust Jennifer’s sound advice.

Seeing the tall, dark-haired woman at the entry to the bar area, Caitlyn waved to get her attention. She watched Jennifer weave her way around smaller tables set up on the bar side. A serious-looking woman, Caitlyn had discovered early on that Jennifer actually had a healthy sense of humor, even though her smiles were fairly rare. Caitlyn also noticed with envy that Jennifer had no problems getting onto the bar stool. Jennifer tucked her large, soft briefcase next to her on the stool.

“Hey, thanks for meeting me,” Caitlyn said with a smile.

“Thanks for the wine. I really need it after my day.” Jennifer pointed behind her. “The restaurant side is packed. I know the food here is good but it’s Wednesday and this looks like a Friday night crowd.”

“It’s the play. They’re practicing all week and have shows this weekend. If you like mysteries, it might be something you’re interested in,” Caitlyn said.

“I heard about that. I’ve been to some of the musical performances at the theater over the years but never a play. I’ll have to look into it. So, what’s up?” Jennifer leaned against the back of the bar stool and sipped her wine.

Caitlyn pulled out a copy of her lease and handed it over to Jennifer. “When you have time, can you look this over and let me know what it means legally?”

“Are you worried?” Jennifer asked, taking the papers and tucking them into her bag.

“Let’s just say I’d rather you tell me if I should be,” Caitlyn answered. “The building ownership is up in question with the death of Jason Malone. I don’t know who the new owner will be yet or if they’d let me negotiate better terms. I just thought it was best to know.”

Jennifer nodded. “It’s always best to know what is legally binding. I’ll look it over when I get a chance and get back to you.
